Example 4.3
Charles Ives, Three Quarter-Tone Pieces, Mvt. I, Largo, mm. 7-12
This example shows two ways Ives uses quarter-tone embellisments: (1) the F-natural in m. 9 is a quarter-tone passing tone between F-quarter-sharp and E-quarter-sharp, and (2) the right-hand B-naturals are quarter-tone lower neighbours to the B-quarter-sharps in the left hand.
