Example 5.19

Ivan Wyschnegradsky, Prelude No. 19, mm. 1-4

In this example, contrary motion between soprano and bass creates a series of voice exchanges that prolong the tonic tetrachord. The soprano arpeggiates upward through all four members of the tonic tetrachord while the bass arpeggiates downward.
